Based on the Hospital Anxiety & Depression Scale (HADS), which is widely used to screen adults, the Paediatric Index of Emotional Distress (PI-ED) assesses psychological distress in children and young people using one short questionnaire.
Standardised on over 1,100 UK children within educational and clinical settings, PI-ED uses age-appropriate language and concepts to ask 14 questions relating to anxiety and depression. The clear scoring system then identifies the children most in need of further clinical assessment and, perhaps, intervention.
PI-ED is unique in its focus on not only children who already have physical health problems (i.e., those in paediatric clinics or hospitals), but also children in a normal situation. Suitable for clinical and educational professionals as a screening measure of emotional distress, it can also be used to indicate clinical change and as an outcome measure.
