How Oakfield Primary School in Rugby is using WellComm Primary

We had been using the WellComm Early Years toolkit for four years when we heard about the launch of WellComm Primary from our link Speech and Language Therapist. Based on our extremely positive experience of using WellComm Early Years, our Headteacher gave the go ahead to purchase the primary version straight away.

WellComm Primary is used by one of our Teaching Assistants and she has found it really easy to use. In the last term she has screened 6 children who were identified by their class teachers as having a possible speech and language concern, including 2 children who joined us in Year 6.

What’s really innovative about the WellComm Primary toolkit is that you don’t need any specific speech and language expertise to use it – you just pick it up and go! WellComm Primary gives you all the resources you need to support children’s speech and language development in one place, including the interventions in its Big Book of Ideas which the TA uses with the identified children afterwards. We also photocopy pages from the Big Book to share with parents so they can support their child at home – with the additional help, it’s these children who often have the best outcomes.

Key outcomes:

  1. 1

Gives you all the resources you need to support children’s speech and language development in one place

  2. 2

Includes the screening test, score sheets and follow up guidance and interventions in The Big Book of Ideas

  3. 3

Offers value for money – it is a complete package in one

Janette Newbon, Language Champion, Oakfield Primary School in Rugby

One child who joined us in Year 2 had attended several schools previously and they reported that he had social and behavioural difficulties. When he joined us, he was screened with WellComm Primary and we were able to identify that he was two years behind in his speech and language development. We believed this was the root cause for his other issues. He is now following a programme of interventions from WellComm's Big Book of Ideas and is doing really well. He is due to be screened again shortly and we anticipate he will have made good progress.

As WellComm Primary includes the screening test, score sheets and follow up guidance and interventions in The Big Book of Ideas it offers really good value for money – it is a complete package in one.

We work closely with our link Speech and Language Therapist and we are aware that our local authority is inundated with requests for speech and language services. With the ability to screen and support the majority of our pupils with their speech and language needs using WellComm Primary, we are helping to relieve the burden on the service.
