On Friday 27 April, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Sale and GL Assessment welcomed Mike Kane, MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East, for a tour of the school and to see how assessments can be used to track children’s progress effectively and provide the school with valuable insights they can share with parents.

During the visit, Mr Kane had the opportunity to talk to teachers about how they have used GL Assessment’s tests to provide them with a measure of stability as the primary curriculum and statutory tests have changed. The marking and analysis service that GL Assessment provides can reduce teacher workload and provide valuable analytical data for cohorts and key groups of children.

Mike Kane, MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East, said: “As a former primary school teacher I know how important it is to have a good understanding of a child’s progress over the year. Tools which help teachers to do this in simple and effective ways and which free up time for lesson planning and classroom teaching are to be very much welcomed.

“St Joseph’s is a high achieving school and I very much enjoyed visiting them again. It is clear the staff, children, supportive parents and school governors work very hard to maintain the outstanding results achieved year on year.”

The Senior Leaders and Assessment Co-ordinators at St Joseph’s said: “We are delighted to welcome Mr Kane to St Joseph’s and it has been a pleasure to show him how we use assessments to provide meaningful information for everyone involved in the school - our pupils, teachers, governors, and our parents, too.

“When the new curriculum was introduced we needed assessments that were both rigorous and useful, and GL Assessment has provided that. Their assessments have given our teachers confidence in a period of uncertainty and have proven invaluable. A benefit has been the ability to continue to give parents solid, reliable information about their child’s learning, formed by rigorous teaching and teacher assessment throughout the year– something we value very highly.”

David Glover, Product Director at GL Assessment, said: “One of the benefits of our assessments is how they provide really useful information for tracking pupils’ progress, identifying barriers that may not be immediately obvious, and engaging parents in their child’s learning. It was a pleasure to share St Joseph’s successes with Mr Kane today.”
