Setting SMART targets for students with CAT4 and FFT

River Tyne Academy is an alternative provision setting based in Gateshead. It is part of the River Tees Multi-Academy Trust and currently has 143 students on roll. Gail Gordon, Teaching Assistant for Assessment & Intervention, discusses how CAT4 has helped identify the abilities of the students and how the data has been used alongside FFT Aspire to set SMART targets.

Students who join River Tyne Academy will either have been permanently excluded from mainstream education or been referred to us by another school. Many of these students are in the care of the local authority, with 60% in receipt of Free School Meals and around 25% with Special Educational Needs. Students might stay with us for 6 weeks, 12 weeks, or an extended period depending on the school that refers them.

Developing strategies for students

In 2019 we purchased GL Assessment’s Complete Digital Solution (CDS) package – a collection of their most popular digital assessments – and began rolling out the assessments with our students. We have used the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) with our students to measure their abilities across four different reasoning batteries – Verbal, Non-verbal, Quantitative and Spatial. CAT4 has provided us with a wide range of reports, generated instantly, to help us better understand how these students process information.

The Individual Student Report for Teachers, a key report provided with CAT4, has been particularly useful in supporting our teachers with identifying the needs of the students. The report includes Implications for Teaching and Learning for each student, and we have been using these to help us develop strategies for teachers to use with their students in the classroom.

Key outcomes:

  1. 1

Measure students’ abilities across four different reasoning batteries – Verbal, Non-verbal, Quantitative and Spatial

  2. 2

Use the Implications for Teaching and Learning provided in the Individual Student Report for Teachers to develop strategies to use with students in the classroom

  3. 3

Use the GL/FFT GCSE Estimates Service, provided by FFT Aspire, to upload CAT4 data to Aspire and produce Key Stage 4 GCSE estimates within minutes

Using this powerful data alongside FFT Aspire has enabled our teachers to produce SMART targets for the students and continue monitoring their progress easily.

Setting SMART targets for students with FFT

It is important for us to set targets that the students feel they can achieve in order to boost their confidence. When it comes to benchmarking our students and target-setting, CAT4 has proved to be invaluable. We have used the GL/FFT GCSE Estimates Service, provided by FFT Aspire, to upload our CAT4 data to Aspire and produce Key Stage 4 GCSE estimates within minutes.

CAT4 provides us with a vast depth of understanding on our students’ potential across the four reasoning batteries. Using this powerful data alongside FFT Aspire has enabled our teachers to produce SMART targets for the students and continue monitoring their progress easily.

Developing personalised learning plans for students

CAT4 has also provided our teachers with valuable information about where individual students may need additional support due to particular strengths or weaknesses, based on their performance across the different batteries. We have recently started developing Pupil Passports to identify the needs of each individual student. We have used much of the information from CAT4 to demonstrate how to support these students in class, which is accessible to all staff in the school.

The data from CAT4 has therefore helped our teachers to personalise and individualise learning plans for students with various needs, such as SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health), in order to support them during their time in our school. I always get excited when using CAT4 with the students, as having a high spatial ability myself I can easily see patterns and shapes – therefore if a student is ever confused with a question I can help them to look at it in a different way, so that they feel more confident when approaching this in future.
