PhAB and PhAB2 Primary

An essential toolkit to identify pupils with phonological difficulties.

Accurately identify children who have phonological difficulties and need additional help to process and use the sounds in spoken language.

The Phonological Assessment Battery (PhAB) provides six standardised tests for 6–14-year-olds, each designed to sample different aspects of a child’s phonological processing. The diagnostic nature of the results means that you can use them to inform your teaching and target intervention programmes to a child’s specific needs to improve their underlying literacy skills.

The later edition of the assessment, the Phonological Assessment Battery 2 (PhAB2) Primary, provides revised versions of the six standardised tests in the original assessment, as well as four new tests, in line with the latest research in phonological awareness. Targeted testing ranges for 5–6 and 7–11-year-olds provide more sensitive assessments to give you a greater understanding of a child’s phonological strengths and weaknesses.

Can we photocopy materials to support children with additional needs?

Yes. If a child is known to be experiencing difficulty with colour or visual stress, then appropriate adjustments may be used in the administration of the battery, such as photocopying the relevant parts from the Picture Book onto the relevant coloured paper.
