Using reading assessments to shape student outcomes

Published

How can schools move beyond simply collecting assessment data to truly using it – shaping strategy, guiding teaching, and improving student outcomes at scale?

Join us for an insightful session led by Rob Davies, Head of Education Improvement at Pembrokeshire Local Authority, as he shares practical, impactful approaches to turning reading data into meaningful action. With 35 years of experience in education – including 21 years in school improvement across three Local Authorities and working directly with Estyn – Rob brings deep expertise in using data to drive system-wide change.

You will also hear from Clare Hewitt, Headteacher at Neyland Community Primary School and her colleague Pam Potter, on how they are working with reading assessment data at school level.

In this session, he will explore how Pembrokeshire has leveraged reading assessment data from the New Group Reading Test (NGRT) to create a more coherent, targeted and effective approach to raising reading standards across the county.

Attendees will gain:

• A clear understanding of how reliable reading assessment data can inform decision making within your setting

• Real examples of how assessment data is being used to identify need, track progress and support intervention

• Practical insights on building a data-informed culture that drives sustainable improvement

• Strategies to translate assessment outcomes into aligned actions that benefit every learner.
