Doubting Miss Daisies

Published

Most teachers will have taught pupils who have come to doubt their own abilities, are overwhelmed by expectations placed on them and become disengaged at school.

This study – a mix of research analysis, real-life examples and advice from teachers – highlights the link between specific attitudes and reading attainment. It will help any teacher with ideas on how to identify and then help those pupils whose progress is stalling and whose confidence is discouraging them from fully contributing in class.

It looks at:

  • The impact of negative attitudes to learning
  • The gender differences in attitudes to themselves and school
  • How negative attitudes can be readily identified
  • What measures teachers can take to tackle low learner self-esteem
