Non-Verbal Reasoning

Understand and assess the abilities of pupils who think more easily in images than words.

This assessment does not involve reading or aural comprehension, and can therefore be used to measure the potential of pupils who have limited literacy skills or children with English as an Additional Language (EAL).

By concentrating on basic learning processes and on reasoning skills rather than reading or mathematical knowledge, these non-verbal assessments provide effective indicators of future academic performance in certain subjects such as maths, science, and design and technology.

Your results, which are age standardised, give a clear indication of a pupil’s abilities, and help inform teaching strategies and individual target-setting.

How Non-Verbal Reasoning can help you

Assesses abilities in all students

Using a non-verbal test helps to identify those who reason best with spatial concepts and who may eventually prove to have relative strengths in subjects like mathematics, science, design and technology. It is also ideal for helping you assess the abilities of dyslexic pupils and those who use English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Not culturally specific

Identifies potential in all pupils equally as the assessment is word-free.

Supports personalised learning

Highlights individual students’ strengths and weaknesses, which may not be evident in their usual class work. Results can be used for individual target-setting and to inform teaching strategies.

Comparison with national average

You will be able to compare your pupils’ results with the national average through Standard Age Scores. Schools may also find the scores useful in describing the overall profile of groups of pupils: whole intakes to a school; classes within a school; ethnic groups of pupils; girls and boys.
