Middle Infant Screening Test (MIST)

Identify early literacy difficulties using MIST and actively involve parents in recovery with the Forward Together programme.

This comprehensive screening, diagnostic and recovery package for children aged 5 – 6 focuses on reading, writing and listening skills, and engages parents to help their children get back on track.

Use the Middle Infant Screening Test to assess your whole class in a child-friendly, untimed test, before beginning the Forward Together programme with the children identified as likely to benefit. The programme lasts from eight to 12 weeks and can be used with groups of up to eight pupils to bring their skill levels up to that of their classmates, raising confidence and self-esteem.

Each pupil works through the Forward Together activity sheets at home with the help of a parent, or in school with learning support staff. Weekly meetings support parents to help their children in the areas highlighted.

FAQs

What is included in the MIST Classroom Pack?

The pack contains:

  • Teacher’s guide
  • Pupil booklet (x20)
  • Class record sheet
  • Forward Together photocopiable activity folder

What do results from MIST show?

Results give an overall picture of a pupil’s performance and their learning strategies in functions which are related significantly to early reading and writing. It highlights those children who need extra support in reading, handwriting, knowledge of letter sounds, word analysis and free writing, so that these skills can be developed through targeted intervention in the Forward Together programme.

How are parents involved in the Forward Together programme?

Parents use the programme with their children over a period of nine weeks, meeting as a group for an hour’s guidance and discussion with the facilitating teacher each week. At the ninth meeting they discuss their child’s progress in the retest. Parents are taken through the programme step by step and many of the activities are in the form of games.

Do I need to buy the full Classroom Pack or can I just buy the pupil booklets?

In order to administer the Middle Infant Screening Test you will need a copy of the Teacher’s Guide. If you are purchasing MIST for the first time or do not have already a copy of the Teacher’s Guide, please purchase the Classroom Pack at the same time. The Teacher’s Guide only needs to be purchased once and you can then buy top up pupil booklets as you need them.
