Scoring Service
Paper scoring
Introduction
GL Assessment offers a hand scoring service for users of our paper-based assessments. Designed to take the work out of marking, managing and interpreting your data, the services deliver fast and accurate results that can be tailored to your needs.
How does it work?
- Supply pupil data: a Pupil Data file needs to be sent to GL Assessment via email. You can do this by exporting data from your school’s Management Information System and matching it against the Pupil Data File template. Delays will be avoided if the data file is submitted prior to sending the pupils’ booklets.
 - Administer the test: You administer the test, requesting that pupils write their answers on the answers or booklets provided.
 - Return answers: Return the answer sheets to our Scoring & Reporting Service division. The address can be found here
 - Scoring: GL Assessment scan and score the tests within 15 working days of receipt
 - Uploading of data: Results are uploaded into the Testwise Reporting Service (TRS) our online reporting system, and the standard reports are created as PDF and Excel files
 - Email notification: You are sent an email notification when your reports are ready. You can then access your reports online by entering TRS using the secure customer login supplied
 - Additional reports: These can easily be requested at this stage. For some assessments this is subject to an additional cost
 - Invoicing: Schools/Clusters will be invoiced by Education after the reports are made available

Historical data
Your data is never deleted so you can continue to request progress reports as long as you keep using the same UPN for each pupil. If you choose to switch scoring services, you can “take your data with you” as long as you continue to use the original set of UPNs, adding new ones to your pupil data file when necessary.
Your reports are kept on TRS for 6 months at which point they are archived. You can request to have these unarchived, however, we recommend that you download your reports as soon as they are made available on TRS.

Speed up Hand Scoring with the Overprinting Service
To make administration and scoring more efficient for users of the paper based assessments and the hand scoring service, we offer a time-saving Overprinting Service. This involves the printing of candidate name, date of birth and other details such as Pupil Registration Number or School Number onto your Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) answer sheets. This enables scoring to be carried out using a scanner called a DRS Optical Mark Reader and speeds up the turnaround time for making the reports available online.

Online Marking Tool
The OMT: A breakthrough in scoring
Hand-scoring test papers is a time-consuming task and certainly not one that makes the most efficient use of a teacher’s valuable time. It can often take up to 4 hours to mark papers for a whole class and interpret, calculate and record the scores – a substantial amount of time in any teacher’s busy schedule.
To combat this, the GL Education Group has developed a new, easy-to-use Online Marking Tool (OMT) that is:
- Fast: The OMT reduces test scoring time for an average-sized class to just 20 minutes.
 - Accurate: It guarantees a much higher level of accuracy than scoring by hand.
 - Advanced: Reports are delivered online as soon as marking is completed.
 - Flexible: You can request further reports or data files quickly and easily.

See how the OMT works
Step 1: Access
Access to the OMT is enabled using a secure customer login that will be supplied to you as soon as your order is processed.
Step 2: Pupil Data
A Pupil Data file now needs to be created by exporting data from your school’s Management Information System and matching it against your Pupil Data File in the OMT. Customers who already use our online testing and/or reporting services for other assessments might find that they are already in possession of a Pupil Data File, enabling them to omit this step.
Step 3: Marking
Select the correct test level and Pupil Data File. With a pupil’s answer booklet in front of you, compare answers and then click accordingly to show a correct or incorrect answer. This process is repeated until you have reached the end of the booklet at which point you can move onto the next pupil booklet.
Step 4: Reporting
Once the marking is complete, the data is automatically processed, giving you immediate access to a standard report in PDF format. This report can differ depending on the assessment but, as a guideline, it will contain: raw scores, standardised scores, percentile ranks and confidence bands.
Step 5: Additional reports
With just a few clicks in the OMT, you can request additional data files in Excel and CSV format for easy importing directly into your school’s Management Information System. Examples include: standard reports (which includes students listing, group demographic comparison, comparison of group and national Stanine distributions, analysis by process categories and question by question analysis, year-on-year progress score and progress category), individual pupil profiles (the score breakdown by category area). These come at an additional charge and are supplied online.
OMT sample reports
Once you have completed marking, the reports will be available for your group. You will have the following reports included in the licence for the OMT.
Group record sheet
This report is in a CSV format and shows all raw data for your assessment.

OMT student listing
This report is a two page PDF showing the student listing and percentile rank as well as the process categories breakdown.
