GL Assessment unveils the British Ability Scales: Third Edition

GL Assessment has today published the third edition of the internationally renowned British Ability Scales (BAS), an established standardised battery of tests designed to assess a child's cognitive ability and educational achievement. Originally published in the 1970s, the assessment has a long tradition of use in both practice and research by educational and clinical psychologists, providing a comprehensive and flexible means of assessing different aspects of a child’s current intellectual functioning across the age range of three years to 17 years 11 months.

GL Assessment publishes Sandwell Early Numeracy Test to identify young children's ability with numbers

GL Assessment has today published the Sandwell Early Numeracy Test – Revised (SENT-R), an assessment that enables practitioners to assess children’s ability with numbers. Designed for use with children from ages 4 years – 7 years 11 months, SENT-R explores five strands of basic numeracy skills: identification, oral counting, value, object counting and language, and provides a baseline of a pupil’s number skills. It is particularly useful in helping to identify targets for pupils with Special Educational Needs and it can also be used with Key Stage 2 pupils with numeracy difficulties.

Research finds nearly half of all secondary school pupils with reading difficulties are not on SEN Register

Dr Sue Stothard, from the Centre for Reading and Language at the University of York, will today unveil findings of a study into reading comprehension. Speaking at the Westminster Education Forum Keynote Seminar: "The review of the Primary National Curriculum and proposals to reform the Early Years Foundation Stage", Dr Stothard will discuss the variance in reading ability across the school system and will argue that the findings show that there are problems with the current process of identifying pupils with reading difficulties within primary and secondary schools in England.

GL Assessment publishes new edition of the Reynell Developmental Language Scales

GL Assessment has published a new, fourth edition of a widely-used assessment for identifying speech and language delay and impairment in very young children. Designed for administration by speech and language therapists, the New Reynell Developmental Language Scales (NRDLS) has been revised, improved and newly standardised on more than 1,200 children aged 2 years to 7 years 5 months in the UK.

Call for more adequate SEN training at GL Assessment's Education Question Hour debate

Many issues relating to special educational needs (SEN) provision were debated at GL Assessment’s Education Question Hour at the recent Specialist Schools and Academies Trust National Conference. Entitled “The right support for the right child: reviewing SEN provision”, the debate saw panellists discuss a range of issues - from meeting the needs of pupils with SEN, teacher training and assessment to Government policy and funding.

GL Assessment launches new test series to check spelling is on track
GL Assessment has today published a new edition of its well-established spelling test series, the British Spelling Test Series 2 (BSTS2) for 6 to 13 year olds. The new edition is designed to play an important role in checking that spelling attainment is on track, supporting teachers in their own assessment of their pupils' attainment and highlighting where additional support is needed for those pupils for whom spelling is especially difficult.

GL Assessment, in partnership with MetaMetrics®, Inc., is bringing The Lexile Framework® for Reading to the UK with the launch of a new version of its Progress in English (PIE) assessment for seven to 11 year olds. Highly successful in the US for boosting children's achievement in literacy, the Lexile Framework allows for more detailed grading of text than a reading age or key stage level indicators that are widely used by schools and publishers today. The 400,000 UK children who currently take PIE tests each year will be able to benefit from the Lexile Framework straight away.

New test launched to boost primary reading and comprehension: The York Assessment of Reading for Comprehension
GL Assessment has unveiled a new suite of standardised, paper-based reading assessments for use in primary schools. The York Assessment of Reading for Comprehension (YARC) is designed to support schools in monitoring children's development of key literacy skills from ages four to 11. Developed in partnership with experts in reading at the University of York, the assessments enable teachers to assess young readers' phonic and alphabetic skills and track the progress of children's reading and reading comprehension across the primary years.

GL Assessment has announced a partnership with leading children's publisher Usborne. The agreement will see a wide range of popular Usborne books published with a new type of classification, called a Lexile measure, clearly visible on the cover. The Lexile Framework for ReadingT is set to become a new benchmark for assessing children's books as it allows for more detailed grading of text difficulty than the standard reading age or key stage levels that are widely used by schools and publishers today.
