Lexile™ measures are an innovative way of developing children’s literacy, within and beyond the classroom, to help them reach their full potential.

The Lexile Framework measures reader ability and textual complexity on the same developmental scale. This produces scores that are immediately actionable. They help teachers and parents to create bespoke reading lists designed to meet and challenge each child’s unique abilities, interests and learning goals.

The reading lists are created from the Lexile Book Database. This contains over 115,000 fiction and nonfiction titles that span a huge range of subjects and styles. Take a look at the Lexile Framework to get a taste of how it works, and how Lexile levels equate to traditional age-based assessments.

The Lexile Framework for Reading has been developed by a leading US assessment company, MetaMetrics™, Inc. It’s the most widely used assessment of reading in the US, with a huge 28 million measures being reported last year. We are currently integrating the Framework into Progress in English. It will be available to schools from September 2008 onwards. This means that teachers and learners will receive a Lexile measure alongside the individual and group profiles and year-on-year progress reports that the assessment currently provides. They will be able to benefit from this enriched information about each child’s reading ability, without having to take any additional tests.
