Introduction
The Screener has been designed to test for phonological error patterns in the speech of children aged between 4 and 8 years, report findings in the context of national norms, and recommend appropriate intervention.
Children with phonological (sound system) impairment constitute one of the largest groups referred for speech and language therapy, a challenge compounded by a shortage of Speech and Language Therapists which leads to long waiting lists. Much of the burden inevitably falls on special needs co-ordinators in schools.
In response, a software program, the Phoneme Factory Phonology Screener, has been developed by the Speech and Language Therapy Research Unit (SLTRU), to support the delivery of therapy to children with phonological impairment. With part funding from the Department of Health, they went on to develop this and two further Phoneme Factory resources for the Granada Learning group. - The Phonology Screener, available on CD, tests children suspected of having a phonological impairment. The Screener helps to distinguish those children with a phonological impairment from those who demonstrate phonological development which is within the normal range for their age. The Screener recommends referral of a child to a speech and language therapist, if necessary, and it provides details on the type of error patterns that the child exhibits.
- A companion CD, the Phoneme Factory Sound Sorter, was developed simultaneously to address the problems identified by the Screener. It consists of interactive exercises to develop children’s listening skills and awareness of sounds in speech.
- In addition to the two CDs, a book is available – Phoneme Factory: Developing Speech and Language Skills. This provides more detailed guidance on phonological impairment and appropriate intervention approaches.
The Phoneme Factory resources mean that many children can be screened earlier and more accurately than before by teachers and SENCOs in schools, and that appropriate intervention can be started immediately.
