At a glance

From April 2008, the Welsh Assembly Government will be using the Schedule of Growing Skills II (SGS) as a bilingual screening and assessment tool within all Flying Start settings.

Published by GL Assessment, SGS is a reliable and effective screening tool that measures the progress and development of young children from birth to five years old.

Introduction

The first of the Welsh Assembly Government's seven Core Aims for children and young people is a commitment to ensure that all children have a "flying start" in life. Flying Start is a specific grant to local authorities and will be targeted at children up to the age of three in some of the most deprived communities across Wales. The scheme aims to improve the psychological, intellectual, social and physical development of the children involved in a way that is measurable and has a real impact on their lives.

Supported by a comprehensive training programme, SGS will be used to assess 2000 children each year as they progress through the Flying Start scheme, measuring their developments in cognition, speech and language, motor skills and social awareness.
