Introduction
Assessment for Learning
Assessment for Learning, or formative assessment, is described by the QCA as ‘the process of seeking and interpreting evidence for use by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners are in their learning, where they need to go and how best to get there’. Peer and self-assessment are vital elements of formative assessment.
Much recent research indicates that effective Assessment for Learning is a key factor in raising pupils’ standards of achievement. Recognised by the DfES, it is a key idea underpinning the Key Stage 3 strategy work on assessment.
AfL involves using assessment in the classroom to raise pupils’ achievement. It is based on the idea that pupils will improve most if they understand the aim of their learning, where they are in relation to this aim and how they can achieve the aim (or close the gap in their knowledge).Benefits
