Here are some of the questions that we are most frequently asked about online testing.
How will my school benefit by switching from paper to online tests?
No more waiting – test results are instantly scored, analysed and delivered directly to your desktop.
No more marking – immediate access to reports means that instant action can be taken by the school or LEA to ensure that each child receives the support they need.
Easier analysis – results are instantly delivered in a flexible digital format conducive to easy analysis.
Compatability with SIMS – results data can be imported into your school’s management information system for swift analysis and record-keeping
Greater pupil motivation – pupils find online testing less stressful and more enjoyable than paper-based tests.
Continuity of assessment – GL Assessment’s digital tests have been fully equated to the equivalent paper-based tests, allowing you to maintain continuity of assessment.
What is Testwise?
Testwise is an online test delivery system that performs three vital processing requirements:
- Administration tools that can be used to schedule assessments, assign candidates to tests, manage users and manage the day-to-day running of the database.
- Tests are presented in rich visual formats.
- Reporting tools that can perform complex analysis, processing and reporting functions.
Testwise is accessed via the internet, which means it can be accessed and administered from any location on the server’s network.
Who is Testwise for?
Primary and secondary schools and sixth form and FE colleges.
How do I get my pupils into the Testwise system? Is it complicated?
No, it’s pretty straightforward. Testwise can make use of standard .csv files that all school management systems can produce.
How will my pupils understand how to complete the tests?
Children are shown sample questions before they begin a test and they can complete these practice questions either at their own pace or in a peer group, under the guidance of their teacher.
Do we need a computer specialist on the staff to run the tests?
A System Administrator is assigned a username and password when Testwise is first installed. Using these details, the System Administrator can access Testwise and create log in details for all other users.
All users of Testwise log in to Testwise in the same way. However, the pages displayed from here are dependent upon the user access assigned to your log in; for example, candidates or some members of staff do not need access to the System Maintenance for Testwise.
Testwise is simple and intuitive to use. Computer skills are not required to run GL Assessment tests on Testwise – you just need a broadband internet connection and computers with internet access.
To set up a GL Assessment test on Testwise, you simply:
- Schedule a test on the Testwise Assessment Centre
- Allow students to take the test online
- Take instant delivery of results and analysis

What if our system crashes in the middle of a test?
If there is a failure in your computer system while pupils are taking the test it will not be possible to re-enter the test at the point at which the failure occurred. In this instance, pupils will need to re-take the complete test. If pupils complete the test and results are stored (i.e. they have click the “end of test” button) and then the system fails, it will be possible to retrieve results and therefore reports from the GL Assessment back-up server.
In the unlikely event that this happens, please call the GL Assessment Customer Support Team on 0845 602 1937 and one of our advisors will help you manage the incident.
